Youth Ministry Minor

GOALS:
This minor is offered for the student who is pursuing ministry with adolescents in a local church or para-church setting. The comprehensive strategy and philosophy for youth ministry which are introduced in this program go well beyond the basics of youth work.

Upon completion of this program a student should:

• be able to initiate a youth program or build upon an existing one,
• understand the role of youth ministry within the larger scope of the church,
• have a motivation for youth ministry that is based upon Christ’s own love and compassion for young people,
• identify and trace the major trends that are influencing adolescents,
• understand the different characteristics of adolescent development and their implications for ministry,
• have the skills necessary for effective communication to today’s teenagers,
• develop competence to minister to adolescents in crisis situations,
• demonstrate effectiveness in reaching adolescents in a secular context with the gospel,
• be able to develop young leaders and release them into their own ministries,
• understand the principles of developing and working with a ministry team,
• gain leadership experience within a local youth group under the supervision of a youth pastor/mentor.
