What does it mean that I have to be "appointed" to a church? Do I have to be on paid staff? Would I have to be full time?

I am already licensed with a staff ministerial or district license, but I would like to upgrade to an International License when I graduate. Do I need to go through the whole process again?

I am graduating in December – how does this change the process for me?

I am not sure what I want to do after graduation. Should I start the licensing process anyway?

I am not sure that I will be graduating this year. Should I start the licensing process now or wait until later?

I am divorced or had my marriage annulled – can I still be licensed?

What is the timeline for completing this process by graduation?

What does it mean that I have to be "appointed" to a church? Do I have to be on paid staff? Would I have to be full time?
Being appointed just means that there is a church who says, "This person is doing ministry here and we are the ministry covering, and believe in and value him or her enough to say s/he should be licensed!"
You do not have to be paid staff or even keep office hours. Most grads are appointed as an "Assisting Minister" to a church, which can mean pretty much anything the church wants it to mean - from full time staff in a very clearly-defined and structured position, to volunteer service in a number of smaller roles. If you don't know where you will serve after graduation, sometimes the church a student has been attending will agree to appoint them, so there is no delay in their receiving a license, and then when a more long-term ministry position is secured after graduation, the license can be transferred to a different church.
You do not need your appointment to begin the rest of the coaching/interview process.

You do not need to complete the entire application packet again, and you do not need to go through the coaching and interview process again. However, you do need to fill out a few new forms:
1. New MP-1 form (your application)
2. 3 new MP-2 forms (references, from Foursquare Ministers who already are Ordained or have an International License)
3. An updated photograph

I am graduating in December – how does this change the process for me?
Turn in your application as soon as you can. You should definitely be able to complete the coaching process before December, and possibly even your interview. If you are not able to have an interview before you leave the area, you will be connected with someone in the local church district where you will be serving after graduation, so you can have your interview there, and still receive your license before the Commencement Exercises in May.

I am not sure what I want to do after graduation. Should I start the licensing process anyway?
If you think there is a strong chance you will want to be licensed, you are advised to go ahead and begin the process. It has proven to be much easier for grads to do this through the school while they are still students, rather than waiting and doing it through their local church district. You can start the process later, but the longer you wait to make your decision, the less chance you’ll be done by graduation, and it is more likely you will face delays along the way.

I am not sure that I will be graduating this year. Should I start the licensing process now or wait until later?
In order to receive your International License you need to be a graduate. If you think there is a strong chance you will graduate this year, go ahead and begin the process. If you think it more likely that you will graduate in December (in three more semesters) then you’ll want to begin the process this spring or in the summer, and if you think you will probably not graduate until May in 2 years, begin the fall semester before you’ll graduate. It has proven to be much easier for grads to do this through the school while they are still students, rather than waiting and doing it through their local church district. You can start the process later, but the longer you wait to make your decision, the less chance you’ll be done by graduation.

I am divorced or had my marriage annulled – can I still be licensed?
Yes, you can be licensed, but there is an additional form (PDF) you will need to complete, and your coach and interview panel will discuss the situation surrounding the divorce or annulment, in addition to the other matters discussed in the coaching/interview process. The main goal of the additional form and questioning is to ensure that every ministry has a healthy and biblical perspective on marriage, and will not be hindered in any way from helping others have successful marriages.
